SEWING TIP

Sewing for the Newborn Baby

Sewing garments and accessories for a newborn child is truly a project of love.  These projects are usually our way of greeting a totally new person to existence.  Where before there was no one now there is this new being.  Often it is easier to buy the stores ready made clothing (and in all countries I have visited, toddler and infants clothes is the most expensive) rather than make a quick hand made infant wrapping.

There are many quality patterns for infants on-line and at you local sewing centers.  Before you pick up that pattern and buy that sale priced material, choose your type of material for your garment project from our suggested list, see Fig. 1.  The texture of the materials is most important when sewing baby items.  You will need fine threads and needles and short sewing stitches when machine stitching.  Use that thimble for hand stitching. By combining the strength of machine stitching with decorative hand stitches your baby garments will last and be cherished for a long time.   DO NOT use threads and needles that are for regular household sewing or adult sewing tasks.

Do pick up those fine edgings for that new infants garment and be sure that the fabric is on our list or recommend for contact with tender newly born skin.
