SEWING PROJECTS

INTERIOR DECORATING

Padded Headboards

To make a padded headboard start this project with a piece of ½ inch plywood or plyboard.  Cut a 3-inch thick layer of polyester batting 2-inches wider and longer than the wood.  Also cut a piece of tightly woven fabric 3-inches larger than the wood all around.

Lay the fabric wrong side up, place the batting over it, and put the wood on top.  Every 10 inches or so snip the batting and fabric from the edge of the material to the edge of the wood.  Starting at the center of a long edge, pull the batting over the wood and staple it in place, working alternatively on both sides.  Then do the same with the fabric, smoothing as you work.  Mount the headboard with picture hangers or bolts.

For a more designer look you can stitch lines, boxes and diamonds onto the fabric with your handy sewing machine.  You may also choose to add appliqués, pockets for favorite toys or dolls or embroidered children’s figures.  Personalizing you headboard is open to your imagination.

Fabric Scraps

Use the leftover fabric from projects to decorate the jars of homemade preserves and other goodies.  Your scraps can also be used to dress up the bottle of spirits and liquors you are giving away for the holidays.  Several of the larger pieces can be cut into 10 inch per side squares and used as table napkins, hemmed or unhemmed.
